The Consumer Council is a special committee of the managing board of the Austrian Standards Institute. It was established in 1991 to represent the consumer interests in the field of standardisation and is financed by the Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection.

  The Consumer Council is intensively involved in the work of ANEC, the European consumer representation in standardisation. Franz Fiala is vice-president and chairman of its environment and nanotechnology working groups.
